Mikaela Abecassis is an artist whose unique creative process results in a distinctive visual language characterized by rich colors, intricate textures, and complex compositions.
At the heart of her work is abstraction, inspired by a bird's-eye view of the world; she weaves layers of texture and color to transform her canvases into intricate, map-like visual narratives. Mikaela wants the viewer to be inspired to reflect on their own inner landscape, allowing a highly personal connection to the artwork.
"I create pieces that transform emotion into form - meant not only to be seen, but deeply felt" she says.
Mikaela’s artistic method is lengthy, intensive and painstaking, with each piece taking several months to complete. She keeps her paintings in a state of deliberate incompleteness, allowing herself the freedom to experiment and invent new, mixed media techniques.
As Mikaela states, " I experiment and explore the act of making art on my own terms, in my own time, developing pieces until I know - or, in fact, feel - that the work is complete."
The sculptural textures are crafted using a mix of saturated pigments, acrylic and spray paints, ink, paper, resin,spackling compound, and canvas. Each layer is meticulously reworked, colors and compositions are continually adjusted, and layers are often destroyed and resurrected until she achieves the desired effect.
Born in the United States to a Portuguese father and Danish mother, Mikaela has drawn inspiration from her diverse background, upbringing, experiences and the various countries she has called home: the vibrant colors and passionate flourishes of Southern Europe, the urban grid of New York City, and the soft, feminine lines and quiet light of the Scandinavian archipelagos all influence her work. Mikaela lives in Portugal.
